Clear Space, Calm Spirit

Security. It’s a basic human need people fill in a variety of ways: relationships, money, possessions. Anyone who has felt insecure, which is all of us at one time or another, can tell you it is not comfortable. People tend to avoid this discomfort in whatever ways they have learned throughout their lives. One way many people do this is to surround themselves with things. “But I might need it someday” is a common defense in reference to something that hasn’t been used or appreciated in many years. But it’s not the thing itself or even having it that makes a person feel more secure, it’s what the item represents. The only lasting security is that which comes from within.

What happens when the very things we count on to help us feel secure become our prisons? At the extreme end of the spectrum people become hoarders and are literally trapped by piles and narrow pathways, but you don’t need to get to that point in order to feel like your home or office is out of control. For many people it is simply the desire to change one’s environment along with the overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to start. Sometimes it helps to have an objective perspective from someone who understands the psychological patterns that led you to that point in the first place. Unless we understand and address the reasons why we do things we are doomed to repeat them. Our environment both influences and reflects our inner state and one must address both to change either.

“Having been a masters level behavior therapist for many years, I’ve seen embarrassment and shame keep many people from seeking help so their out of control environments remain that way year after year despite their desire for change,” said Mark Mansfield, MC, owner of Clear Space, a unique holistic home organizing business that addresses change on many different levels.

In setting a goal to make things better, what “better” means is subject to individual definition. Security only comes when one’s inner and outer environments reflect the type of life a person truly desires. If you feel your home or office is out of control and you are ready to do something about it, there is no better time than now.
